The most excellent commentary by Charles Luk to the Shurangama Sutra has this to say about three expedient meditative practices for liberation:

"Samatha is the meditative study of all as void or immaterial, samapatti is the meditative study of all as unreal, transitory or temporal and dhyana is the meditative study of the Mean* as inclusive of both" [* including both unchanged noumenon and changing phenomenon, again per Upasaka Luk's commentary to the same Sutra].
