Seshin: There is a huge difference between doing zazen in an old abandoned mine and doing zazen in a ZC with 20 or more students. The solitary adventure is for the more advanced students. It is something they really have to do.

We are afraid of being alone with ourselves in the West to the extent we cannot imagine solitude, embracing Facebook etc. so we don't even have to be alone on the toilet! A lot of of modern teachers like to use an interpretation of the Treasure of Sangha to enforce this communal aspect. It seems to interfere with awakening.
