Perhaps the following simile might be useful.
Consider a written word and its meaning.
Then the word is not its meaning, nor is it included in its meaning. The written word is in fact "not meaning" but it is false to say "there is no meaning" or "the written word is its meaning". Rather the written word itself can only exist or be perceived in the context of meaning. One thing is to say that the finger is not the moon. Another thing is to say that "there is no moon" or "the finger is the moon, the moon is the finger". The pointing finger exists in fact only because of the moon.
What is Satipatthana but the affirmation, purification, concentration and empowerment of the pure spiritual self/mind/consciousness ? Disidentification and negation is meaningless and worthless except in the context of an underlying unification, expansion and affirmation.

Luciano: Buddhism of the Nikayas and the Agamas, among other things, is about mistaking what is not the self with the self. We humans attach to what is not the self in the belief it is the self—who we really are.
What transmigrates in Buddhism is not the self or a soul but, instead, consciousness which in Sanskrit is vijñāna (lit. in two parts knowing). Buddhist meditation in a nutshell is transcending consciousness: the perfect unity of pure subject with pure object which is really a return to the One Mind.

contemporary zennists come from the schools of D.T. Suzuki and T. Deshimaru, their claims and teachings are not really in the spirit of their former masters. If you read everything Suzuki and Deshimaru said, and not just a bit of their teachings, you will find that they were definitely not materialists nor nihilists,and they holded a pretty traditional view of buddhism.
