Going it alone may not be the best of scenarios, but it beats getting steered in the wrong direction by some bozo with a shaved pate. Especially one who admits he has no real clue about Zen.

Just the other day I was reading some online commentary from a zen teacher who admits he has not awakened to self nature, but still feels qualified to teach because he offers friendship. He even berated any student who might seek out a knowing teacher, for having this desire -- as if the whole Zen religion is just a big joke.

I really pity Zen teachers who would risk throwing themselves into the hells because they don't really have any legitimate basis to teach, but wear the robes anyway, in order, I suppose, to be thought well of by others or because they are bored with life and Zen seemed like good entertainment.
