This materialist attitude so common in modern buddhism (particularly in the west) is what kept me from buddhism for so long. It amounts to nothing more than a sort of nihilistic attitude. They latch onto one part of Buddhism (letting go of attachments to conditioned phenomena) and completely ignore the entire purpose for this (awareness and experience of the unconditioned.) If there is no transcendent reality/nirvana then there is no release from the suffering of samsara, and the very basis of buddhism becomes pointless. A buddhism without nirvana is hardly distinguishable from nihilism. Anyway thank you for sharing the story, brought a smile to my face.
