Fundamentally we are not the in or out breath. Our true nature has never been other than before breathing. The most simple practice is not to follow our breathing but just be aware of it. Following the breath is a huge mistake since intrinsically we are not this body.

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate box to ask this question, but I've been re-reading your Dark Zen interview, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to focus on what is/occurs "antecedent to the breathing cycle." CO2 builds up, and you inhale...that's what I notice. If I focus on "watching or counting the breath" I find my breathing is influenced by my observation. In the Zen Hall I can clearly hear this happening with other practitioners...huffing and puffing. I figure after 3 1/2 years of doing this I should be able to at least observe my breath without influencing it. Any advice, Zenmar?
