My master told me;

"The dialectical sickness of the soul, is to experience endless cycles of birth and death and all the suffering that comes with it. In this world, no-one but a redeemer of his own soul, one managing to bypass the five great thieves, stands against evil. What is such a jewel of a Mind, if not an island of perfect refuge? Of nirvana."

"I" take refuge with everything that "I" can - atman, five aggregates, you name it. Rather than 'nothing takes refuge', I would like to see everything take refuge. If pursuing this puts me outside the definition of "Buddhist", then so be it.
