Some say that the Buddha rejected to cast system and was therefore not a Hindu. Of couse he did! He left his home to become a Sadhu, or a Shramana, and therefore lost his cast. In India, renunciates have always been beyond the cast system - Nihil Novit Sub Sole.

How true! Recently a South Indian pandit confirmed me that in some ancient Tamil texts, the Buddha Dharma is mentioned as one of the orthodox dharshanas, together with Samkhya, Yoga, Vedanta or Mimamsa.
