Nice exploration of the term Nimitta. I had come across it in my study of the Lankavatara. Incidently, when I was writing on the five dharmas I had two interpretations of this term, Suzuki's "Appearance" and Sutton's "Sense-perception". I think your understanding is most accurate. The previous two translations do not address the concept of efficent cause and thus provide no basis for nimitta as to its origin and its role in Buddhist enlightenment.

A scary thought to leap into the (appearant) nothingness, the darkness with no option of turning back. What can motivate us to do this? We must either be desperate or full of faith.
