Thanks for posting the quote from Cleary! I've been having trouble with the 12 links--specifically, distinguishing the ones in the middle--contact, sensation, craving, grasping and becoming--for the past 3 years. My Chinese American teacher has been doing his best to teach us this sequence, but we end up getting tied up in the visual symbolism: drinkers, pregnant women, etc. Also, he says that the twelve links can be applied to the birth of thoughts as well, and that we should tackle the task of breaking one of the links, ideally, sensation, which he associates with preferences, or craving, as a step to non-attachment.
